Gujarata Engineering Research Institute (GERI)

A technical visit was organised by GH Patel College of Engineering and Technology, Civil department dated 6th October 2016. All students along with faculty members were involved in it.We departed at sharp 9:30 am .We reached GERI at around 10:30 am.Mr. Khan,Engineering Incharge at GERI,then threw some light on the history of GERI.He informed us that GERI has been working since past 60 years.Er.Khan has very sound knowledge in the field of hydraulics structure.GERI has 140 models of various hydraulicstructures spread across Gujarat. There are around 660 dams in Gujarat.GERI is spread across a vast area of 140 acres.GERI is one of the best research institutes of Gujarat. The information regarding different structures are as under:-1.MEN RIVER:-The model scale is kept(1:50).Khan sir, discussed various problems regarding the path of the river. To this problem the solution was to provide aqueduct structure.Siphon is constructed when flood level of river is higher than that of aqueduct.Barrels are provided to reduce accumulation of sedimentation.2.ORSANG RIVER:-The scale was kept(1:80).Similar to MEN river Orsang also has aqueduct structure in operation since past 25 years.25 meter depth sand is available of good quality.Khan sir also added that the pier length is kept 80 meter and pile length is 25.3 meter.GERI also informed to the government that no excavation should be carried out along 3 km radius surrounding the structure.3.SABARMATI RIVER MODEL:-The scale was kept 1:100.during the construction of this structure they assumed the possibilities of flood to be 50% but after the 95% of the construction was over the flood occurred 50% more than the assumption due to which the structure failed. The area created due to the dam was named assaint sarovar whose main was to provide recreational facilities, recharging of water level etc. After explaining this structures sir khan threw some light on spillways and siphon structures which was worth understanding.4.SARDAR SAROVAR DAM MODEL:-The scale was kept 1:150.This project is among the largest projects of India.Maximum research has been done on this project.Khan sir gave some details regarding this project like its crest level is 122.2 meter.Other info regarding this project is as under:-No. Of gates:-30 nosWidth of gates:-18.3*16.76mFRL/HRL=138-68M/140-21MSPILLWAY CAPACITY=81615MM3RESERVIOR CAPACITY-9466MM3CATCHMENT AREA-8800 MM3LOWER CHUTE SPILLWAY=4 GATESUPPER CHUTE SPILLWAY=3 GATES5.UKAI DAM:-scale was kept 1:300.this dam was constructed in 1974.it has 13.6 cusec. They constructed the whole model of surat city within the scale 1:300.Goverment of Gujarat helped a lot in this project. From the above Institutional visit students under go how to design the hydraulic structures, importance of model making in hydraulic design, how to solve the problems regarding the upcoming issues on the hydraulic structure.
