One Day Symposium On "Green Building: Principles, Concepts And Case Studies"

        The Civil Engineering Department of G H Patel College Of Engineering and Technology, Vallabh Vidyanagar (A Charutar Vidhya Mandal Institution) has organised One-Day symposium on "GREEN BUILDING: PRINCIPLES, CONCEPTS AND CASE STUDIES" on 15 th October 2015. The Symposiumwas organised in association with Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and partially sponsored by Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST).As many as 350 participants ,including students and faculty members of Engineering and Architecture from various colleges attended the Symposium.The Symposium mainly focused on very significant aspects of green building technology.The inaugural programme started with a prayer offered by Civil Department Team followed by a salute to Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, the former President of India on the Birth Anniversary. Dr. J D Patel, Hon. I/C Secretary, Charutar Vidya Mandal (CVM) was the president of the inaugural programme. Mr. Sameer Sinha, Chairman of IGBC Chapter, Ahmedabad was the Chief Guest and Ms. Shreya Dalwadi, Director, Harmony Planning Services Private Limited, Baroda was the Guest of Honour. The programme was graced by the august presence of Er. V M Patel, Hon. Jt. Secretary, CVM and Er. M J Patel, Hon. Jt. Secretary, CVM. Dr. Khadeeja Priyan, (Professor and Head, Civil Engineering Department) Convener of the Symposium has given the inaugural address and a hearty welcome to the dignitaries. All the dignitaries have been provided a healthy welcome by offering fruit bowls instead of floral welcome. Mr. Sameer Sinha highlighted the importance of energy efficiency in the construction sector and explained the role of Indian Green Building Council in providing awareness to the stakeholders. Mr. Sinha motivated the students for active participation in the green building initiative. Dr. J D Patel has given the presidential address in the inaugural programme. During the inaugural programme, An IGBC Student Chapter was inaugurated in the College. The inaugural session ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Snehal Popli, Associate Professor in Civil Engineering Department followed by National Anthem. After the inaugural programme, all the dignitaries were present for the planting of a tree sapling near the new Civil Engineering building.After the tea break, Ms. Shreya Dalwadi delivered the key note speech on "Green Building Technology". Ms Dalwadi mentioned about the importance of sustainable buildings and low carbon footprints. Dr. A K Verma, Professor and Head of Structural Engineering Department has chaired the session. The Morning Technical sessions comprised of two lectures. This was followed by the lecture of Dr. Ronita Bardhan from IIT Bombay on "Green Building Principles and Concepts". After this Mr. Agam Shah, Sr. Research Associate of CEPT University, Ahmedabad conducted the lecture focussing on Energy Efficient Buildings.The afternoonsession comprised of three case studies. Mr. Loveleen Garg from GIFT, Gandhinagar, commenced the session with his case study on the GIFT city and its green initiatives. Then Mr. Abhishek B. Patel presented his case study on the green building of the Narayan International School, Vadodara. The last lecture of the session was conducted by Mr. Shivam Shukla from LandT, Vadodara. He presented his case study ona green building in Knowledge city, L and T, Vadodara. Overall, the symposium was quite informative and beneficial for the students as well as the faculty members of different colleges, who attended the symposium. Considering that this was the first ever event organised by the new Department of Civil Engineering of GCET, was really fruitful to the participants .
