The Asterian Journey

One of the most interesting and mind boggling field of science and technology is Astronomy. Astronomyis a natural science which is study of celestial objects such as stars, galaxies, planets, moons, asteroids, comets, etc. As an attempt to provide such a captivating experience to GCET students , GCET Astronomy Club and IEEE hosted an event "THE ASTERIAN JOURNEY" on October 20, 2015 ,which comprised of three phases: Observation of Sun spots, an expert talk and Sky-Gazing session. The entire event was coordinated by Jay Parmar and Jaydatt pandya. The enthusiasm had begun with the energetic event campaigning at GCET. As a resource person we were honoured to have well-known personality of amateur astronomy Dr. Brijmohan Thakore, Associate professor of Department of Physics, Sardar Patel University, Vallabh vidhyanagar. The event was initiated with Sun Spots Observation near GCET Auditorium. Dr. Thakore showed us dark spots of our sun by using telescope. That was very much interesting and beautiful thing for all the participants as well as faculties. After watching sun spots there was an introductory talk on Astronomy -For Entertainment, where the participants were shown formulas to calculate various attributes of celestial objects just by clicking photographs of the correct object at the correct time. After a very interesting and informative session the participants were taken for a sky gazing session on the tarrace of our mechatronics building, where they observed the moon and our nearest neighboring galaxy. In a nutshell, this was a very informative event for all the enthusiastic participants and had a lot to learn.
