There is huge amount of onion harvesting (approx. 14.1 lakh Metric tonne in year 2008-09 and 153.5 lakh Metric tonne in year 2011-12) done in Gujarat only. Once the onion is harvested from the field, the root and shoot of the onion is to be trimmed which is a labour oriented process. It is estimated that the manpower requirement is around Twelve (12) man days /tonne which is equivalent to 120 man-days/ acre of land assuming an average onion production of 10 tonne/acre of land. Due to the changing scenario of industrialization in Gujarat the farmers are finding it difficult to get right quantity of labour at right time. The project will not only help one such farmer but will also help many such farmers in Gujarat and India who are finding it difficult to harvest the onion crop due to shortage of man power. This will also help a small scale industry to develop a new product for the agriculture needs.
